Hot Potatoes - Cloze Exercise

Cloze tests require the ability to understand context and vocabulary in order to identify the correct words or type of words that belong in the deleted passages of a text.  They can be used as revision exercises to help you to revise in a slightly different way.

This exercise will help you to create a Cloze activity using Hot Potatoes.

1.  Choose an activity/topic that interests you;

2.  Select up to 3 websites and write between 5-10 interesting facts about your chosen topic.  For example:

  • Sir Steve Redgrave won 5 Olympic Gold medals;
  • David Beckham currently plays for LA Galaxy.

3.  Now imagine that you need to remember these facts for a test.  Could you select a word in each sentence to leave out so that you can test yourself?  How about this:

  • Sir Steve Redgrave won ____ Olympic Gold medals.
  • David Beckham currently plays for LA ___________.

4.  Use Hot Potatoes to create a cloze activity by selecting 'JCloze'.

5.  Enter a title.

6.Type in your sentences.  Typing them as a list will help you to read the information more efficiently.

7.  Once all sentences are typed, highlight a word in each sentence and click 'Gap'.  At this point you can enter a clue if you think you would need help remembering.  Select 'Ok' and repeat until all sentences have a word missing.

8. Click the 6th icon from the right of the screen to export the quiz.

9. Enter a file name and save.

10.  Click 'View exercise in my browser'.  Your quiz is ready!
