  • Amy, who attended a summer school at Bristol then went on to the university to study for a BSc in Childhood Studies, said: "Previous to the summer school, I'd never left my home town, and going to a different place was exciting – the environment at university, which was more independent. You can do your own thing. I honestly thought there was no option for me to go to university. No one in my family had ever been. My mum doesn't work and her partner is disabled. I didn't see any option but to go into work after A-levels."

    Lily's experience

Lily spent 5 days at the Sussex Study Experience – a summer school with Sussex University. She stayed for 4 nights in a hall of residence alongside other First Generation students, ate her meals in the restaurants across the campus and took advantage of the fantastic social life on offer. During the days she undertook academic work on her chosen, experiencing lectures, seminars and research in the university library.  The week ended with a celebratory presentation ceremony attended by family and friends. This is what she had to say about her experience:

I would just like to say thanks for the opportunity to go on Sussex Uni Summer School. It was the best 5 days:-) Made so many new friends, and have my heart set on studying Law at Sussex. It was an amazing experience.
